A Timber Beach House Inspired By Its Humble Predecessor

The house owners of this beach shack in Flinders, Victoria were being eager to preserve the intent and timber craftsmanship of the rundown initial structure, although making a far more generous, light and open up loved ones home.

‘The uncomplicated resolution and structural expression of these factors are in portion what influenced the structural expression of the additions,’ states director of Agius Scorpo Architects Nic Agius, who labored with operator-builders Ben and Pip David (owners of BD Furniture & Cabinetmaking and The Dwelling Whisperer Co respectively) to completely transform the home. 

‘Ben’s talent and craftsmanship was one thing we wanted to investigate, and this motivated us to draw on the features of the existing framework and prolong them into something grand and luxurious.’ 

70 square metres at the front the home was retained to maintain its modest, reduced-pitched facade, followed by a generous open-program living area extending to outdoor decks on the north and south sides. In its place of classic doors, spaces are subtly defined by a double-sided Cheminees Philippe hearth, joinery, and alterations in the flooring system course.

A different laundry at the home’s centre marks the discreet entrance to the bathroom, prior to the main bed room at the rear with an en suite. 

The timber structure of the new dwelling space references the uncovered timber ceiling of the  present dwelling, albeit with a new scale and degree of craft. Nic describes, ‘We chose to make use of an outsized grid framework out of reclaimed timber so this would be sturdy and textural and rooms would be arranged in between them. On major of this was a huge raked cathedral ceiling with rafters set at 45 levels to distinction with the grid technique and create a layered ceiling place.’
